Evolution in the wild Flashcards
How can natural selection alter the frequency distribution of heritable traits?
Directional, disruptive and stabilising selection
What is directional selection?
When conditions favour individuals exhibiting one extreme of a phenotypic range, shifts the curve in one direction, changes the mean
What is disruptive selection?
Conditions favour individuals at both extremes of a range with intermediate at. a low value, increases variation
What is stabilising selection
When conditions act against extremes, reduces variation
Which traits does selection favour?
Individuals whose heritable phenotypic traits provide higher reproductive success tan others
What is batsman mimicry?
a palatable or harmless species evolves to mimic an unpalatable or poisonous model.
When does the mimic benefit from batsman mimicry?
When the frequency is lower than the model, more frequent then shifts the balance.
What is spatial variation?
occurs when the quantity that is measured at different spatial locations exhibits values that differ across the loactions
What is temporal variation?
variation that is a function of time
What is man induced variation?
Evolution in a direction due to change brought about bu humans
