Altruism Flashcards
What is altruistic behaviour?
Behaviour that benefits individuals at a cost to the altruistic individual
How could altruistic behaviour evolve?
Behaviour isn’t really altruistic but selfish, selection for it more apparent in parents for offspring as genes more likely to be present in the individual, so gene for altruism is passed don. Also altruistic behaviour may be reciprocated, so again is selfish.
How have altruistic adaptations evolved for the good of the gene?
occurs at the level of the individual. Behaviour selfish at the level of the gene. Gene that provides altruism is phenotype that increases reproduction/survival of individual so genes and individual are selfish
What is kin selection?
evolutionary strategy that favours the reproductive success of an organisms relatives even at the cost to the individual
What is Hamiltons rule?
relatedness times benefit is greater than cost
