Evolution Flashcards
Biogeography
The study and distribution of species over geological time and in geographical space
Homologous features
Internal or external elements of organisms that seem similar, suggesting the connection to a common ancestor
Analogous features
Elements of organisms that are similar, yet they are not related
Vestigial features
Features that have no function and are from a past ancestor
Species
A group of organisms that are able to reproduce offspring that are fertile
Population
A group of the same species living and interbreeding within the same area
Micro evolution
The changes in variation that occurs within a species
Macro evolution
The development of new species from earlier species over many generations
Speciation
Occurs when species change significantly over many millennia, giving rise to two or more different forms
Extinction
Occurs when species become unsuitable to their environment and eventually die out
