Evolution Flashcards
What was Lamarcks theory?
That characteristics developed during an organisms lifetime and then could be passed down to the next generation
Who suggested a theory called ‘the inheritance of acquired characteristics’
Jean-baptiste Lamarck
What was Charles darwins theory?
Suggested the theory of ‘natural selection’. That changes in organisms took place over a Long period of time. Those that were best adapted, breed and passed on their characteristics. Didn’t know about genes
Why did darwins theory’s of natural selection become only gradually accepted?
Because it challenge the idea that god created every living thing and any scientists believed there wasn’t enough sufficient scientific evidence
What is classification?
When putting organisms into groups so we can make more sense of how closely they are related
What the natural classification system?
Wen biologists study the similarities and differences between organisms in order to classify them
What are the easiest systems to understand? (Natural classification system)
The largest kingdoms - the plant, animal & the Kingstown which contain microorganisms
What’s the smallest group in the classification system?
The species
What can members of a species do?
Their very similar and can breed together to produce fertile offspring
What are evolutionary trees?
Models that can be drawn to show the relationships between different groups of organisms
What happens to evolutionary trees when new evidence is found?
Biologists may modify these evolutionary relationships
What do ecological relationships tell us?
How species have evolved together in an environment
