Evolution 2 Flashcards
When was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection published?
By Darwin in 1859.
What factors did Wallace focus on within Natural Selection?
The biogeographical and environmental pressure.
What did Darwin focus on within natural selection?
The fight for survival due to competition.
What two parts can biogeography be split into?
Historical and ecological.
What is the historical part of biogeography?
It has an emphasis on past events such as continental drift and is used by systematists and palaeontologists.
What is the ecological part of biogeography?
It has an emphasis on more recent events such as habitat destruction and species competition. It is used by ecologists.
What is microevolution?
Small changes in a gene pool that can be observed over small periods of time.
What is macroevolution?
Large evolutionary changes such as the formation of whole taxonomic groups that cannot be observed individually.
What is artificial selection?
When desired traits are chosen and bred across generations.
What is irreducible complexity?
The idea that structures have many interdependent parts, meaning that the structure cannot function without all the parts working correctly with the structure.
What is sexual dimorphism?
The idea that different sexes look different, such as males usually being larger in size than in females. This makes the males look more “scary”.
