Drift and species formation Flashcards
What are the 5 agents of evolution?
Mutation, gene flow, non-random mating, genetic drift and selection.
How does migration affect strong genetic drift?
It will reduce variation within between populations and increase variation within populations.
What are the three pre-zygotic isolating mechanisms?
Habitat isolation, temporal isolation (species breed at different times) and behavioural isolation.
Can divergence occur in populations without mutation?
No
What is peripatric speciation?
A special version of the allopatric speciation that happens when one of the isolated populations has very few individuals. Genetic drift plays a major role in this.
Out of the 5 agents of evolution, which ones do you need for speciation?
All of them apart from migration.
What are the post-zygotic barriers to reproduction?
Hybrid inviability, hybrid maladaptation and hybrid sterility.
What accelerates speciation?
Strong divergent sexual selection - failure to recognise potential mates.
What it parapatric speciation?
When populations are separated by an extreme change in habitat.
