Evolution Flashcards
Evolution
The change in a kind of organism over time. The process by which modern organisms through natural selection
Natural Selection
- Overproduction.
- Variation. Through mutations, or Sexual Reproduction
- Selection. Some individuals survive longer and reproduce more than others.
- Adaptation. Individuals with the best adaptation to the environment are more likely to reproduce. Pass adaptations to the next generation where the offspring is better suited.
Either…
Directional: one end of the phenotypic range to another
Stabilizing: Favors intermediate phenotypes
Disruptive: Favors extreme phenotypes on either side.
Bacteria
They are prokaryotes. Single-celled organisms with no nuclei. They reproduce asexually.
Fitness
Whoever reproduces more is more biologically fit
Antibiotic Resistance
Bacteria are growing resistant to antibiotics because antibiotics kill all bacteria except for the bacteria that are immune.
Antibiotic
Prescribed medicine that kills all bacteria it reaches
Extinction
When no more organisms in a species exist.
Speciation
when a group within a species separates from other members of its species and develops its own unique characteristics.
