Evolution Flashcards
What is Lamarckism?
Theory created by French scientist (Lamark)
Theory stated that a change in an organism could be found in future generations
(This theory is known as Inheritance of Acquired Traits)
What is the Evolutionary Process According to Lamarck?
- Environmental factors cause change in an organism
2. New acquired traits due to the change can be passed on to the next generation
Illustration of Lamarckism
Lamarck reasoned that Giraffes stretch their necks to reach food in trees. As food consumption reduces on the relatively lower levels of the trees, giraffes will acquire slightly longer necks to reach food. This trait will then be passed on to next generation.
Rejection of Lamarckism
Not enough evidence to support this idea — was stronger evidence against it
For Example: Sheep herder have been cutting off the tails of sheep for thousands of years but new sheep are always born will tails
Describe theory of Natural selection
Created by Charles Darwinism
(1) Organism overproduce — leads to competition — scarcity of resources
(2) Scarcity leads to a struggle for survival (e.g organisms and species less of advantage relative to other organisms will die off — strong ones survive)
Keynote: strong or (fitness) doesn't necessarily mean big and strong could also refer to conditions (usually environmental) that give a species an advantage of another
(3) Fit or strong one survive and pass on their genes to future generations
