Clinical prediction rule study types
Derivation study: proposed mechanism of diagnosis, intervention, or prognosis, should be used with caution due to limitations of only being studied in a small group of patients with a small group of clinicians
Level 4 validation study: one level above a derivation study, provides further information for proposed mechanism of diagnosis intervention or prognosis and can be used in clinical practice
Level 3: show proposed models for diagnosis, intervention, or treatment is stable within a similar sample to the original validation study. Not the highest level of validation, but can be utilized
Level 2 validation study: utilizes a wide array of patients and clinicians to validate findings. One step below an impact study of utility analysis, therefore, can be trusted for treatment of a patient
Level 1: wide variety of patients and clinicians and includes impact study
