Evidence Based Medine Flashcards
What is EBM…
EBM - evidence based medicine
It is the use of the evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. It means integrating clinical experiences with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.
What are the 5 steps of evidence based practice:
- Ask focussed questions
- Find the evidence
- Critical appraisal
- Make a decision
- Evaluate performance
Hierarchy of evidence:
RCT Cohort Case- control Cross- sectional survey Case studies
What is does PICO stand for and what is it used for?
P - Population (who looking at)
I - Intervention (What is used)
C - Control (compared to)
O - Outcome (what was the result)
Once you have you PICO question what should you do?
Convert this into a search and find the evidence
PubMed is a good place to look
Critical appraisal of these articles - reliability, validity, applicability
Look at for type of trial, bias etc
Make a decision whether to use the information you found and analysed
