Q

long-term potentiation (LTP) 4 one! also What does this mean

A

deliver burst of quick pulses 2 axon 2 repeatedly activate synapse (making pre- + postsynaptic cells fire)
→ synapse gets stronger (+ Stays that way)
= LTP

Q

how might u demonstrate LTP

A
  1. electrical stimulation 2 evoke EPSPs
→ then deliver high frequency stimulation (HFS) 2 synapses
→ when u then go back 2 giving initial single pulses, the EPSP has grown (synapse is stronger)
→ EPSP doesn’t decay back 2 baseline (LTP makes long-term changes 2 synapse strength)

Q

Morris water maze (shows that blocking LTP worsens memory) . what happened

A
  1. rodent put in pool of water, supposed 2 get on2 platform

performs task repeatedly until able 2 remember platform location

pool divided in2 quadrants (training, 2 adjacent, opposite)

once task acquired, take away platform + look @ how long rodents spend looking @ training quadrant 4 platform
  2. found: more NMDA receptor is blocked by APV, worse memory gets (rodents not looking as much in training quadrant ‘cause won’t remember)

Q

Reversing LTP using ZIP (study)

A
  1. have rotating arena w rodent inside

give shock in particular quadrant of arena

have 22hr pause (during which u administer control or ZIP), then a probe trial (how much do rodents avoid shock area
  2. found: if injected w control, rodents avoided being in shock quadrant for 24hrs after final learning trial; if injected w ZIP, go Right back in
