Evaluation: The multi-store model of memory Flashcards
1
Q
State the 1st evaluation point of the multi-store model of memory.
A
Supporting evidence
- Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration & coding supports existence of a separate STM & LTM store
- Beardsly (1997)
- Found prefrontal cortex active during STM but not LTM
- Squire et al
- Hippocampus active in LTM
2
Q
State the 2nd evaluation point of the multi-store model of memory.
A
Case study
- Patient called HM = Hippocampus removed to reduce epilepsy
- Could not form new LTM’s
There this provides support as:
- Patient unable to transfer information from STM - LTM
- Before surgery was able to retrieve information
3
Q
State the 3rd evaluation point of the multi-store model of memory.
A
Model is too simple
- Research does not support that they are ‘Single unitary’ stores
- There are a number of qualitatively different binds of LTM
e,g Maintenance rehearsal does not explain LTM episodic memory but does in semantic memory
