Evaluation of Biological Theories Flashcards
1
Q
what were the strengths of Lombroso’s theory?
A
- he was the first person to study crime scientifically
- lead to further development of criminology
2
Q
what were the weaknesses of lombroso’s theory?
A
- outdated for modern times - racist and sterotypical towards black people and ethnic minorites
- no scientific evidence - seen as a subjective theory
3
Q
what were the strengths of sheldons theory?
A
- large sample size used - comparasons were justified
4
Q
what were the weaknesses of sheldon’s theory?
A
- not scientifically proved - relies only on biological factors - body shape could develop because of jobs, hobbies etc
- subjective as it’s only sheldons judgments - questionable reliability
5
Q
what were the strengths of brain abnormalities?
A
- scientifically proved by Raine et al
- correlations found between EEG readings and criminality
6
Q
what were the weaknesses of brain abnormalities?
A
- crimes caused by brain injuries and diseases are rare
- some psychopaths have normal EEG readings
7
Q
what are the strengths of biochemical theories?
A
- biochemical factors eg breast feeding are recognised by courts and used as defence
- sex hormones etc can effect mood, judgment and aggression
8
Q
what are the weaknesses of biochemical theories?
A
- testosterone levels don’t usually affect agression in most men - more verbal aggression than physical
9
Q
what are the strengths of the XYY theory?
A
- scientific evidence - proved
- john wayne gacy case supports theory
10
Q
what are the weaknesses of the XYY theory?
A
- males are often undiagnosed - reduces sample size for studies
- doesn’t include the ‘nurture’ argument (environment)
11
Q
what are the strengths of twin studies?
A
- gives evidence to support genetic explanations - MZ twins should both be criminal if one is
12
Q
what are the weaknesses of twin studies?
A
- concordance rate would be 100% if genetics were a cause
- environmental factors could effect criminality
13
Q
what are the strengths of adoption studies?
A
- large sample was used
- easy to compare genetic and environmental factors
14
Q
what are the weaknesses of adoption studies?
A
- ethical issues - exposing children to biologica parents
- adoptive children are likely to be placed in families that resemble biological family - effects reliability
