-they aim to reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of angry outbursts

-1. cognitive preparation: offenders identify situations likely to evoke anger, so thought patterns can be challenged
-2. skill acquisition: teaching new coping mechanisms, eg. breathing techniques and grounding techniques to deal with rage
-3. application practice: rehabilitate criminal offenders and practice new behaviours by role playong with their therapist
