Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Animal and plant cell organelles
Ribosomes
Complexes of RNA and protein that are responsible for protein synthesis
Cytoskeleton
Provides internal structure and medicated intracellular transport
Plasma membrane
Semi-permeable and selective barrier surrounding the cell
Nucleus
Stores genetic material (DNA) as chromatin; nucleolus is site of ribosome assembly
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Transports materials between organelles (smooth ER = lipids and rough ER = proteins)
Golgi apparatus
Involved in the sorting, storing, modification and export of secretary products (e.g. lipids and proteins)
Mitochondrion
Site of aerobic respiration
Peroxisome
Catalyses breakdown of toxic substances (e.g. H2O2) and other metabolites
Chloroplast (plant cell only)
Site of photosynthesis - manufactured organic molecules are stored in various plastids
Vacuole (plant cells only)
Maintains hydrostatic pressure
Cell wall (plant cells only)
Provides support and mechanical strength; prevents excess water uptake
Lysosome (animal cells only)
Breakdown / hydrolysis of macromolecules
Centrosome (animal cells only)
Radiating microtubules form spindle fires and contribute to cell division (mitosis / meiosis)
