Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
What substances do connective tissues often secrete and where does it take place?
Connective tissue often secretes collagen and elastin in the extracellular matrix.
What are different types of connective tissues?
Cartilage, ligaments, blood, adipose tissue
Where does protein synthesis take place?
It occurs in the ribosomes and rough ER.
Where does lipid and carbohydrate breakdown take place?
It occurs in the per-oxisomes and cytoplasm.
Where does ATP production take place?
It occurs in the mitochondria.
Where does the modification and distribution if proteins take place?
It occurs in the Golgi apparatus.
Describe mitochondrial DNA.
It is circular and self-replicating. Self replication of mDNA takes place during binary fission. Very similar to bacterial DNA.
What are the functions of the smooth ER?
- Lipid synthesis
- Poison detoxification. (ex: drugs or poisons)
- Transport of proteins.
- Able to transport proteins that crossed over from rough ER to the Golgi apparatus.
Where does ribosomal RNA synthesis take place?
It occurs in the nucleolus .
Are lysosomes surrounded by a single membrane? True or False.
True.
What organelles are surrounded by double membranes?
Mitochondria and nuclei
What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysosomes digest material using hydrolytic enzymes.
What structure does NOT contain tubulin?
Microfilaments.
What structures DO CONTAIN tubulin?
Cilia, Flagella and Centrioles
