Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic organisms Flashcards
- What is an eukaryotic cell?
- What is a prokaryotic cell?
An eukaryotic cell or eukaryote is a unicellular or multicellular organism, whose cells are large and complex. They’ve got:
* Organelles held within the membrane
* A proper nucleus and
* Mitochondria to respire.
A prokaryotic cell or prokaryote is a unicellular organism which is more simple and small. They lack a nucleus, and many other essential organelles.
Explain the structure of an eukaryotic cell.
An eukaryotic cell has got:
* Cell membrane (double layer)
* Cytosol (fluid)
* Mitochondria
* Cytoplasm (cytosol + organnelles)
* Ribosomes
* Golgi apparatus - transports, modifies the proteins and lipid (fat)
Describe the structure of prokaryotes or prokaryotic cells.
A prokaryotic cell has got:
* Outside layer of carbohydrates, called Capsule
* Have a cell wall (when plant)
* Plasma membrane (semi-permeable)
* Cytoplasm
* Ribosomes
* Nucleoid - Contains mixture of threads of DNA and RNA, but does not control the cell.
These cells lack many other organnelles unlike an Eukaryotic cell
