Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Flashcards
Which organelle is responsible for the production of lipids in a eukaryote?
Endoplasmic reticulum
Which structure assembles ribosomes in a EUK?
The nucleolus
Plasmodesmata function?
They are plant cell wall channels that allow the trafficking of molecules between cells and play an important role in plant development
Cell wall structure?
The cell wall is made up of cellulose which provides structure and support for the cell, it contains chloroplasts, which carry out photosynthesis
Compare a fungal cell and an animal cell?
They are both eukaryotic however animal cells contain a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole, which are absent in fungal cells
What sizes are EUK and PROK cells?
Prokaryotic cells are generally much smaller than eukaryotic cells as they are between 1 and 5 micrometres, whereas eukaryotic cells are 10 to 100 micrometres
What structures are always in PROK cells?
DNA, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosome and cell wall
Pilli function?
Pilli is for attachment for other cells, capsules are for additional protection, mesosomes infold plasma membrane associated with DNA during cell division, flagella is for more efficient movement
EUK has
Membrane bound organelles
Cellulose based cell wall
DNA held on linear chromosomes
DNA located in the nucleus
ATP production in mitochondria
A nucleus
Larger ( 70s ) ribosomes
PROK has
No membrane
Peptidoglycan based cell wall
DNA in a circular pattern
DNA within the cytoplasm
No nucleus
Small ribosomes
May have flagella
Ribosomes which are the site of protein synthesis
What is differential centrifugation?
It is is a separation method where the components of a cell are separated based on their density according to the force they experience
