What are the external factors effecting ethnicity and educational attainment?
1) cultural derivation

what are the three areas of cultural deprivation?
1) language
2) attitudes and values

how does language effect it?
- children from low income black families are not able to develop reasoning and problem skills as their experiences at hime don’t focus on developing these
- some families are argued to be held back if english isn their first language
how does attitude and values effect ethnicity and educational attainment?
-many black children have a lack of motivation when it comes to education adopting a ‘fatalistic approach’ when trying to shape their own future
how does family structure effect ethnicity and educational attainment?
MOYINIHAN - argues that as many black families are matrifocal children are deprived of adequate care as the mother has to both work and care
- they lack a male role model which results in poor socialisation,especially with black boys
- cycle then reproduces its self
whats a contrast of a family structure?
BAHATTI found that parents of Bangladeshi students were very supportive of their children succeeding in education and had a high level of interest in it
how does material deprivation effect ethnicity and educational attainment?
palmer provides evidence that compared to whites
- 50% of ethnic minority children live in low income
- twice as likely to be unemployed
what is the reasons for palmers evidence?
- lack of language skills
- cultural traditions
what are the internal influences effecting ethnicity and educational attainment?
1) teacher labelling
2) streaming & setting
3) pupil identities

what evidence is there for teacher labelling?
teacher don’t regard black and asian pupils as ‘ideal pupils’ they were given negative labels and black students were seen as aggressive and disruptive
-teachers had ‘radicalised expectations’
what evidence is their for setting and streaming?
teachers stereotypes often result in black students being placed in lower sets and streams as they assume that he students are less intelligent and more likely to be disruptive
-self fulfilling prophecy
what are the pupil identities?
teachers have three dominate ways of looking at student identities?
1) the ideal pupil - white,middle class,masculine
2) pathologised pupil identity - asian students who are seen as plodding and achieving through hard work not nature
3) demonised pupils-students seen as unintelligent and peer led to underachieving
what are the student subcultures?
As a result of a students self fulfilling prophecy students especially black males form anti school subcultures as an attempt to gain a status from their peers
what study is their of a group of students going against their label?
mary fuller study of black girls who challenged their anger about being labelled into educational success and dint seek approval from teacher
why are schools seen to be institutionally racist?
1) marketisation and selection - lack of info is given in minority languages,racist bias in interviews,schools didn’t share deadlines for applications with parents of ethnic minorities
2) ethnocentric school curriculum- 3’s and 3 r’s
3) new iqism - students being placed in lower sets and streams
