religion creates sense of community solidarity, allowing people to maintain tradition and their identity
-mosques etc act as community centres and provide a focus point for social life by protecting shared cultures and traditions
helps to cope with worries of hostility- all going through same thing (solidarity)

provided a focal point in immigration patterns - eg pryce argues that pentecostalism is religion of the oppressed, helps african carribbean adapt to british society, provides protestant ethics which helps members to succeed by encouraging self reliance and mutual hope in improving situation
