ethnic difference in achievement Flashcards
external factors
intellectual and linguistic skills, attitudes and values, family structure and parental support, cultural and material deprivation, racism in wider society
cultural deprivation
CD theorists:
low income black families lack intellectual stimulation and enriching experiences
black children are often socialised to have a fatalistic outlook on life (live for today)- not a strong focus/value on hard work
family structure and parental support
Murray –> there are higher rates of single parents in black families which leaves the children being poorly socialised
Asian families are more likely to reflect the school system and will implement more accademic goals.
compensatory education
material deprivation
evaluation –> materially deprived chinese and indian students still achieve better than most, eg chinese girls on FSM were 21% more likely to achieve 5 or more higher grade GCSEs that non FSM white girls.
racism in wider society
goes on to affect
poverty: a product of racism
employment: Wood found that less interviews were given to applicants with ethnic sounding names as opposed to white ones
housing: discrimination forces minorities into substandard accomodation
evaluation –> new laws ahev been implemented to prevent racisal discrimination in the workplace. some argue that its racism as an internal factor thats the issue not external.
