Ethics- Reliability of cognitive processes Flashcards
Ethics- Reliability of cognitive processes
When investigating the reliability of cognitive processes, we often have to conduct studies that affect the cognition of ppt. this means we sometimes need to conduct studies that manipulate ppt in some way. as such, it is v important for studies to be ethical and for researchers to take extra care when handling ppt.
As studies on the reliability of cognitive processes sometimes involve testing the cognition of ppt, we sometimes need to manipulate ppt’s thinking, e.g when testing the anchoring bias or peak end rule. As such, there is risk for mental harm
Protection of ppt: mental harm
tversky and kahneman
- asked ppt to make decisions from questions that involved moral/ethical dilemmas. ppt may have felt distressed/ under a lot of pressure
- scenario involved them choosing which people to save and which to kill. might have caused them distress/ discomfort
Yuille and Cutshall
- asked them abt robbery? it might have been scary for them
(tbh this one seems like a stretch but go off i guess)
Stress yuille n cutshall bc witnesses had to recount crime?
Can we say ppt felt stres when watching car crash for loftus but they reduced emotional distress bc it was a vid
Some studies may need to inflict pain as a result of testing our heuristics and cognition. This can lead to issues of physical harm
kahneman- peak end rule
asked ppt to put hands in ice cold water. puts ppt under HARM. physical harm
ppt were expected to feel pain, researchers even asked them to rate their pain.
probably doesnt leave lasting damage, but there may have been other scenarios/ situations that could be created that test the peak end rule. so questionable whether this findings of this study justified the pain ppt felt
