ARC-PA Standard B6.02

Elements of Professionalism
a. altruism: principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others
b. accountability: obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions
c. excellence: quality of being outstanding or extremely good
d. duty: sense of moral commitment or obligation to someone or something
e. integrity: quality of being honest and having strong moral principles
f. respect: a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important
Challenges to professionalism

PA Competency: Professionalism
- expression of positive values and ideals as care is delivered
- involves prioritizing interests of those being served over your own
- know professional and personal limitations
- practice without impairment from substance abuse, cognitive deficiency, or mental illness
- demonstrate a high level of responsibility, ethical practice, sensitivity to a diverse patient population, and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements
Four Principles of Ethics
- Autonomy
- Beneficence
- Justice
- Non-Maleficence
Autonomy
self-rule; pt’s right to make all decisions pertaining to medical care, choices, and treatment
- all providers must respect these decisions
Beneficence
acting for the benefit of others; putting others first, always act with the pt’s care and wellbeing in mind over your own
Nonmaleficence
to do no harm; impose no unnecessary or unacceptable burden to the pt
Justice
all pts in similar circumstances should be receiving similar care; fair distribution of resources, risks, and costs
Codes of Conduct
a set of rules outlining the social norms, rules, and responsibilities of, proper practices for, an individual, part or organizaiton
Oath
a statement of fact or a promise with wording relating to something considered sacred as a sign of verity. A common legal substitute for those who conscientiously object to making sacred oaths is to give an affirmation instead
