What is beneficence?
Actions done for the benefit of others, actions that produce good
What is nonmaleficence?
Actions that avoid harm or evil
What is informed consent?
Right to consent or right to refuse
For informed consent, what are we required to provide?
Disclosure of information
Patient must understand information
Voluntary choice w/o coercion
Respect for consequences of choices made
What is autonomy?
The right to decide for oneself about ones life whether the decision is wise or unwise
What is decision making capacity?
Comprehension (understand in order to decide)
Choice (deliberate about alternatives)
Consequences (understand the consequences of the decision of consent/refusal)
How are decisions made for pts who lack DMC (decision making capacity)?
Others decide for them based on “best interest” and “substituted judgement-what the pt would want)
What are advanced directives?
Enables people to express their wishes about health care if they are unable (before they become ill)
Living will (what you want) Durable power of attorney( who will make decisions for you)
