Compensatory Maneuvers Flashcards
Name 4 reasons to use the chin tuck
Reduce premature spillage (holds bolus in oral cavity)
Widens Vallecular space (hold more liquid before swallow)
Promotes better base of tongue to posterior pharyngeal wall contact
Decreases opening to the laryngeal vestibule
Name 3 reasons to use the head turn
Increases TVC closure
Promotes passage of food/liquid to the stronger side of pharynx
Reduces resting pressure of the CP segment (pulls cricoid cartilage away from posterior pharyngeal wall)
When is the head turn commonly used?
When there is residue in the pharyngeal wall or pyriform sinus
*especially when asymmetry is displayed
What does the effortful swallow do?
Promote STRONGER tongue to palate contact
Promote STRONGER base of tongue to posterior pharyngeal wall contact
What is the different between the contact of the BOT and posterior pharyngeal wall when the chin tuck is used compared to the effortful swallow?
The effortful swallow is STRONGER
What is the supraglottic swallow?
Holding your breath prior to and during the swallow
THEN coughing immediately after
THEN dry swallowing
What is a super supraglottic swallow?
Supraglottic swallow combined with an effortful swallow
What is it called when a pt voluntarily prolongs the duration of their laryngeal elevation? (HINT: this also increases CP Opening)
Mendelsohn maneuver
Name postural changes/maneuvers
Chin tuck Head turn Effortful swallow Supraglottic swallow Super supraglottic swallow Mendelsohn maneuver
Why are compensatory maneuvers used?
Improve oral/pharyngeal transit of food/liquid
Improve airway protection
