Ethics -Lesson 5 Flashcards
Boundaries
define a set of role expectations for the counsellor-client relationship
They provide framework for the relationship
Boundary Crossings
a departure from commonly accepted practices that could potentially benefit clients
Boundary violations
a serious breach results in harm to others
Self Disclosure
*can be dangerous if it shifts from the needs of the client to the needs of the counsellor
*must only be done when you can show that it is in the best interest of the client
*
Dual or Multiple relationship
situation where a counsellor is in a professional role as well as another role with that person or another person who is close to that client
What are the duties and virtues underlying Boundaries
Nonmaleficence and nonmalevolence, integrity,
character trait of having a congruent. relationship between our ethical intentions, duties, and actions (including words), and role expectations.
Integrity
combining roles. and responsibilities, is. quite common in some professions i.e., teacher mentor, supervisor
Role Blending
gradual erosion of boundaries that can lead to multiple relationship and harm to the. client. Often found in mixed roles (social and professional).
Slippery Slope phenomenon
motivated by clients needs
consistent with client therapy
client history, culture, values and diagnosis have been considered
rationale for the boundary crossing is documented in the client’s record.
The boundary crossing is discussed with the client in advance to prevent misunderstandings.
Full recognition is given to the power differential, and the client’s trust is safeguarded.
Consultation with colleagues guides the therapists decisions.
Guidelines (Barnett, lazarus) to dual relationships/boundary crossing
Offer safety from the possibility of rule by impulse and desire
boundaries
exchanging goods and services in lieu of a fee. eg mechanical services for counselling
Bartering
NSMR
(Non sexual multiple relationships). Represent a boundary crossing but not all are violations
ethical NSMRs
do not exploit or harm client, do not impair the objectivity, or effectiveness of the therapist
