what is informed consent? (ethics)
A
- revealing the true aims of a study
- participants have the right to know what they are letting themselves in for when participating in a study

what are the rules for deception? (ethics)
A
- it is sometimes necessary to deceive participants
- you should not deceive anyone without good cause as the may agree to participate in something that may cause them distress

what is the right to withdraw? (ethics)
A
- if a participant feels uncomfortable they have the right to withdraw & leave the experiment at any time

what is protection from physical/psychological harm? (ethics)
A
- participants should be in the same state after the experiment as they were before
- it is the experimenter’s responsibility ability to protect the participants

how can confidentiality be applied? (ethics)
A
- the findings from the experiment should be anonymous, therefore the results will be confidential

how is privacy respected? (ethics)
A
- participants should not feel an invasion of their privacy (e.g. observations in their home)
- people can be observed in public or where they can be seen by strangers without needing consent

what is presumptive consent? (ethics)
A
- gaining informed consent from others (e.g. asking a group of people if the think the study is acceptable)

what is prior general consent? (ethics)
A
- participants are asked to consent to a variety of studies (including some that may deceive them)
- by agreeing to take part in all the studies the participants are giving consent to being deceived
