What is the point of acting ethically in Hinduism?
–> Atman: the soul
–> Karma: consequences of actions
–> Reincarnation: caused by karma, auspicious rebirth
–> Moksha: release from reincarnation and unification with Brahman

Sadharana dharma
The ethical bedrock of Hinduism.
Teleological (consequences) –> move towards progress.
Auspicious rebirth, moksha.
Vishesha dharma
Deontological –> based on duty, rule based.
“Inauspicious” –> bad karma from a previous life can be cancelled out by “virtuous actions” in the current life.
Name some Hindu virtues
Renunciation, tranquility, aversion to fault-finding, compassion and freedom from covetness, forgiveness, fortitude, gentleness, non-violence.
What are the laws of Manu?
–> Around 200 BC
–> Deontological in form (a list of precepts for ethical living)
–> Teleological in spirit, or in essence (more guidelines than strict laws)
–> Brahmins are role models (virtue ethics) for the rest of the varnas
–> Brahmins: top caste, priests.
Which religion is more community based?
Judaism: more community oriented
