Define disability

A

A physical or mental impairment (or both) that has substantial and long-term adverse effects that affects their ability to carry out day to day activities/tasks.

list the characteristics of disability based on impairment. (7)

  • can be Mental, physical, both
  • Determined by the effect on the person
  • Doesn’t need to be linked to a medical illness
  • Doesn’t require a cause/aetiology
  • Disability may not be visible
  • Can be fluctuating, recurring or progressive
  • Past impairment (can’t discriminate someone because they had an impairment in the past – even if they don’t have it now)
