What are ethics?
Moral principles or beliefs about what is wrong or right
What are the 4 Ethical Approaches? (JUMI)
Justice = fairness + impartiality
Utilitarian = greatest good for the most ppl?
Moral Rights = maintain the fundamental rights of humans?
Individualism = promote one’s long-term interest? –> promotes honesty + integrity
What are the 3 golden questions?
- Does decision fall within accepted values/standards that apply in organisation?
- Are you willing to see the decision reported in newspapers or on TV to public?
- Would your family/friends/peers accept the decision made?
–> answer ‘yes’ to all 3 questions = its an ethical decision
What are the 4 Spheres of Executive Responsibility?
- As a person
- As an economic agent
- As a company leader
- Beyond firm’s boundaries
What is the role for ‘As a person?’
Manager’s have duty to do what is right according to their OWN personal values or values
What is the role for ‘economic agent?’
Manager’s responsible for org. to operate at a profit –> manager must answer to shareholder’s + maximise value for shareholder’s
What is the role for ‘As a company leader?’
Manager’s using influence to shape org. agenda and culture towards org. goals + represent org. + inspire others to follow
What does ‘Beyond firm’s boundaries’ mean?
Manager must consider external factors on wider society and national environment based on their decisions
What is an Ethical Dilemma?
Situation where all alternative choices or decisions have potentially negative ethical consequences, making it difficult to distinguish right from wrong
What is the Primary dimension of Diversity?
- Things we can’t change
- Age, physical abilities, ethnicity, Sex, Race
What is the secondary dimension of Diversity?
- Things we can change
- Wealth, height, education, gender
What are the 3 cases of enhancing diversity?
- Business case - Diversity makes good business b/c attract + retain talented workers
- Globalisation Thesis - Organisation’s policies reflect current values
- Social Justice Case - moral principles of fair ness and equity
