What are the 4 roles of the interpreter?
Message COnverter, Message Clarifier, Cultural Broker, advocate
What is a Message converter? What’s another name for this?
Think of it as the interpreter converting the original message to the target language. Main details are Accuracy and First person, and copy the register (formal vs informal)

What is message clarifier?
Transparent interventions (when you intervene make sure you say its you intervening), and confirm own understanding
Culture Broker (what are the other names?)
Cultural Clarifier, Cultural Meidator, Cultural Interface
- to facilitate communication across cultual differences
- alert parties to cultural misunderstanding
Advocate
- identify potential risks for serious harm
- beneficence (support health and wellbeing of patient)
When should you advocate? What’s the process??
Can i verify this is harm?
IS this about me? (My bias or opinion)
Will anyone else so smth?
Will patient speak up?
Last resort?
Potential for serious harm is still there?
What if you decide YES i will advocate?
- transparency
- Identify who is responsible (speak to someone that can do something about it)(tell them what happened and what needs to change)
- Be calm and respectful
