Cancer Flashcards
Normal cell cycle How is it?
Mother cell replicates and creates a daughter cell just like mother. Hormones superivse the replication process. In the end, hormones say you lived long enough now mother cell has to die to not create sickness BYEE
Cell Cycle in Cancer
Mother creates and abnormal daughter cell. That abnormal daughter cell does not die off bc it does not pay attention to the hormones so it continues to replicate spreading the cancer
How can you diagnose cancer? (4)
Blood tests, cell and tissue sample, biopsy, physical exam
What are the two cancer classifications?
Hematological Cancer; liquid cancer (in the blood)
Solid tumor cancer (mass)
Malignant vs benign tumor
Malignant; Must be treated bc they are aggressive or toxic
benign; doesn’t have to be treated but can be dangerous depending on its location
What is staging in cancer. What ca be used (2). What is metastasis?
Staging is how far has the cancer spread
CT Scan and MRI
Metastasis is seeing how many, how large and how many lymphatic nodes is the tumors found in
Grades of Cancer. Why is it difficult to treat?
How atypical the mutation is. So its the difference between the normal cell and the abnormal cell. If the daughter cell doesn’t look anything like mother cell then it has a higher grading. Since the tumor has different cells, not one treatment can work for all.
The team in oncology
Pathologist, oncologist, speciality nurses
Curative vs Palliative
Curative; Treat the cancer or attack it or eliminate it
Palliative; cancer can not be treated but we can slow down the symptoms or reduce pain
Localized vs systemic
Localized; in one area
Systemic; more than one place
What is Cultural Mediation
informing parties that there is a cultural difference (by being still in the background) and promote patient to provider exchange of knowledge regarding culture
how to decide wether to take action or not if there is a cultural misunderstanding
Restricted to only interpreting
Alert parties there might be a cultural issue
Alert parties what the cultural issue may be
Explain to parties what the cultural issue is may be at hand
Explains to parties what cultural issue there is and suggest course of action
