Respect definition (autonomy)
Autonomy; the ability for people to make their own decisions and act independently (ask a person in a wheelchair if they need help opening the door) DONT assume
SOP of respect
Interpreter promotes direct communication (pls talk to each other)
Interpreter promotes patient autonomy. (Rather than solving things for the patient, direct them to the resources)
Cu;rural Awareness
- awareness to to cultures including biomedical cultures (medicine, or medicine terminology (acronyms)
Maintains Boundaries
Maintains the boundaries of the professional role, no personal involvement (do not step out of interpreter role)
Sop role boiundaries
Limits conversation, only interpreting (not answering healthcare questions), even if you are a nurse, DO not combine the jobs
SOP professionalism
Prepared for an assignment (ask what appt is about beforehand and review ), ask for explanation on unknown terminology, avoid sight translation (too hard)
Advocacy def
When the patients health, well-being, or dignity is at risk, the interpreter may act as advocate
How to decide whether Sight translation is appropriate?
CALL MODel
C; Complex; is it high register?
A; Advanced; difficult terminology
L; Legal; anything that has to be signed
L: long; exceeds two pages
Steps if you say yes to sight translation
- Decide (yes or no)(calll model)
- Read entire text (understand context)
3 Identify Challenges (circle potential challenging terminology)
4 Clarify or consult (ask questions
5 Render text smoothly
6 Decide again. Is it aprópiate for sight trans?
