ethics Flashcards
What are ethical guidelines?
Ethical guidelines are pieces of advice that guide psychologists to consider the welfare of participants and wider society.
What is the ethical guideline of protection in research?
Participants have the right to be protected from physical and psychological harm and should not be exposed to greater risks than in their normal life.
What is informed consent in research ethics?
Participants have the right to know what will happen in a study before they agree to take part.
What is the right to withdraw in research ethics?
Participants should be able to leave a study whenever they wish, and this must be made clear at the start. Incentives cannot be taken away if they leave.
What is confidentiality in research ethics?
All data should be stored securely, and participants’ names should not be published unless they give explicit consent.
What is deception in research ethics?
Researchers should not deliberately misinform participants about the study.
What is privacy in research ethics?
Participants should have the right to ignore questions, and in observations, they should only be watched in situations where they expect to be publicly seen.
What is debriefing in research ethics?
At the end of a study, participants should receive a full explanation of the aims and potential consequences so that they leave in at least as positive a condition as they arrived.
