Baron Cohen et al (eyes) Flashcards
What is the Intelligence Quotient (IQ)?
A measure of intelligence that produces a score representing a person’s mental age. Average score = 100.
What is the Autism Quotient (AQ)?
A score obtained from the Autism Spectrum Quotient Test, ranging from 0 to 50. Higher scores indicate more autistic traits.
What is the Theory of the Mind?
The ability to recognize mental states like beliefs, desires, emotions, and knowledge of ourselves and others.
What was Aim #1 of Baron-Cohen et al.’s study?
To test whether adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) or High-functioning Autism (HFA) would do bad on the revised ‘Reading the Mind in the Eyes’ task.
What was Hypothesis #1 in the study?
Participants with Autism will **score lower **on the revised ‘Reading the Mind in the Eyes’ task than the control group.
What is the Ceiling Effect?
When most participants score the highest value, making it difficult to measure & differentiate between them.
What is the main issue with the original ‘Reading the Mind in the Eyes’ task?
It included both basic emotions (easy) and complex emotions (too difficult), leading to imbalanced results.
What type of experiment was conducted in the Baron-Cohen et al. study?
Quasi-experiment: the researcher had control over the procedure but not over participant allocation toconditions
What was the negative correlation found in the results?
A significant negative correlation between the AQ and Eyes Task scores (–0.53), but no correlation between IQ and Eyes Test scores.
What was the conclusion of the study?
- Participants with AS or HFA have difficulty identifying emotions in others (lack of theory of mind).
- The revised Eyes Test was a more sensitive measure of social intelligence.
