What is a contested case hearing?
Hearing conducted by single hearing officer who is an attorney employed by the academy.
What is the continuum of compromise?
Officers with 7 years of experience often develop ethical dilemmas
What is phase 1 of the continuum of compromise?
Acts of omission; Ex. Turning a blind eye to traffic violations or crimes
What is phase 3 of the continuum of compromise?
Acts of commission-criminal; ex. Tampering of evidence, thefts, bribery, falsify timesheets
What is the 2nd phase of the continuum of compromise?
Acts of commission- administrative; ex. Carrying unauthorized equipment or policy violations
What are common ways LEO rationalize unethical conduct?
Denial of a victim/ injury; victim of circumstance; higher cause; blame the victim
What are the consequences of unethical conduct?
Criminal charges; civil litigation; negative effect on community relationship; lose certification; demoted or terminated
What are some concerns with ethics and social media?
Social media exacerbates public perception; places law enforcement on a world-wide stage; social media reaches unlimited number of people
What are some of the issues with LEO substance abuse and driving?
May result in public reprimand or loss of certification
