Containment, control, contact, communication
Containment
Considered a safety zone; actual or perceived perimeter that defines where a suspect can move; allows officer to slow things down
Control
Considers suspects themselves; officers decision to force or talk into compliance
Contact
Ability or willingness of both officer and suspect to engage in verbal de-escalation
Communication
Requires high level of emotional intelligence, patience, skill; shift mind from what can legally be done to what should be done
What is tactical communication?
Focuses on creating time and space to diminish the use of force;
What is verbal de-escalation?
Focuses on building report and empathizing to gain compliance

Treat everyone equally; use empathy; request actions and answer questions; offer options and allow choices; give opportunities for reconsideration

Don’t over invest professionally; keep hobbies; keep friends outside law enforcement

- Prepare greeting
- Listen with intent

- Block and defect ( acknowledged what was said and move things back to relevant issue; divert attention from the trigger and back to facts

Play to their ego; don’t misrepresent yourself; ego is driving force for them
SAD FOR individuals
Individuals with some sort of depression; likely suicidal and poor problem-solving skills

Be blunt; don’t minimize their pain; give glimmers of hope
