- The main responsibility of a research ethics committee is to protect
potential participants in the research - Must also take into account potential risks and benefits for the
community in which the research will be carried out. - Its ultimate goal: promote high ethical standards in research for
health.

- Ethical approval is an essential part of conducting research.
- Ensure that all research is carried out within the School has been
subject to an ethical review. - Staff and students conducting research on humans must apply for
ethical approval. - In some cases, ethical approval may have been granted by an external
organisation (e.g., NHS) and this approval letter must be submitted to the
SREC.
