Ethical implications of research studies and theory - AO3 Flashcards
Wider impact of research …
P - Socially sensitive research can have big social consequences.
E - Increased potential for more of an indirect impact on participants families and the groups the participants represent.
E - Need to think beyond simply safeguarding the interests of the individual in research.
L - Research needs to take into account the likely impact of the research on the larger group of which the participant is a member.
Inadequacy of current ethical guidelines (limitations)…
P - Limitation of current ethical guidelines is that research may still inflict harm on people in society.
E - Strict ethical guidelines to protect the needs of research participants, but not deal with all the ways research may inflict harm on a group in society
E - Ethical guidelines do not ask researchers how their research may be used by others.
L - Suggests considerations outlined sometime ago may need to be altered.
May disadvantage marginalised groups…
P - Groups in society are excluded from research or misrepresented when they are included.
E - By misrepresenting different groups within society or excluding them means these groups then miss out on any of the potential benefits of research.
L - Failure to fully understand such groups in research means our understanding of human behaviour has been unecessarily restricted.
Just avoid socially sensitive research…
P - Solution to socially sensitive research is to just avoid it as a whole.
E - This is because finding may have negative for participants and the section of society they are representing within society.
E - This would leave psychologists nothing to examine but unimportant issues, Sieber and Stanley argue this isn’t a responsible approach to science.
L - Psychologists have a duty to conduct such research.
Engaging with the public and policymakers:
P - Ensure research is used responsibly, the researcher should engage with the wider society.
E - To reduce the likelihood of misuse of data, psychologists should be taking responsibility for their findings.
E - Should be aware findings might lead to abuse or discrimination
L - Individual researchers should be supported in promoting their research in a socially sensitive way.
