Ethical implications and socially sensitive research Flashcards
Ethical implications
Consequence of conducting research, both for ps and groups they represent.
The Public
Public may be influenced by publification of research, forming negative stereotypes about certain groups/minorities
Seiber and stanley
Identified four key aspects in research that raise ethical implications
1-The research questions
Questions like “are there racial differences in IQ?”may be damaging to members of some groups.Questions must be assessed carefully.
2-Methodology used
Consider the treatment of ps,eg ensuring the location of the study is not published
3-Institutional context
Consider who is funding the research.Making this information public helps to overcome this.
4-Interpretation of findings
Consider how the research will be interpreted.Ensure research is published objectively and not open for interpretation
Examples of socially sensitive research
Anorexia, atavistic form (lombroso),Theory of mind etc
