Definition of ethical implications.
Consequences of research in terms of effects on individual participants or on the way in which certain groups of people are regarded.
What is an example of research that may have ethical implications?
- Study on depression.
- Findings may suggest those with depression will never recover.
What are the 3 stages of planning a study that must be considered?
Research question, dealing with participants and the way that the findings are going to be used.
Definition of socially sensitive.
Studies where there are potential consequences, either directly for participants or for the individuals represented by the research.
Strength of socially sensitive research = Benefits for the group that has been studied.
- E.G = homosexuality, was listed as a ‘sociopathic personality disorder’, removed in 1973.
- Eventually regarded as a normal variant of human sexual behaviour.
- Illustrates the importance of researchers tackling sensitive topics.
Strength of socially sensitive research = Certain groups rely on research related to socially sensitive issues.
- Government uses research to develop social policies e.g in childcare.
- Preferable to base policies on scientific research rather than politically motivated views.
- Psychologists have important role in providing high quality research on socially sensitive topics.
Limitation = Poor research findings may lead to erroneous findings.
- E.G = access to independent schools is based on entrance exam performance.
- This is also likely based on genetic potential.
- Any socially sensitive research needs to be planned with care to make sure findings are valid due to effects on people involved.
