What is cultural bias?
A tendency to ignore cultural differences and interpret all phenomena through the ‘lens’ of one’s own culture.
Where can results only really be applied to?
The groups of people where the results came from.
What does WEIRD stand for? (the cultures that he would study)
Westernised, educated, industrialised and rich democracies
What is ethnocentrism?
Judging other cultures by the standards and value of ones own culture
What is an example of ethnocentrism?
Ainsworth’s strange situation - It only reflected the norms and values of American culture
What is cultural relativism?
Idea that norms and values can only be meaningful and understood in specific social and cultural contexts
What is imposed etic?
Looking at behaviour from outside a given culture and attempts to describe these behaviours as universal
What is an emic approach?
Looking at behaviours from inside a culture and identifies behaviour that is specific to the culture
