What is Utilitarianism?
An action that is right only if it produces the most overall happiness of all the available actions
What are the rules of Utilitarianism?
- Consequences are the only thing that matters
- Happiness is the only consequences with value
- Everyone’s happiness is equally important
What is Kantianism?
The moral worth of an action depends only on the intentions
This rejects Utilitarianism that consequences are all that matter
What is Animal Welfare?
Is concerned with care and well being of the animal while providing for human needs. (Utilitarianism)
What is Animal Rights?
The philosophy of the standing of animals in relation to human society. No use of animals for human benefits. (Katianism)

What is the Animal Welfare Act?
Requires minimum standards of care animals bred for commercial sale, research, transportation and exhibit
What is the Human Slaughter Act?
Requires that animals are unconscious before slaughter to minimize pain
What is the Marine Mammal Acts?
Regulates the killing, capturing and harassing of marine mammals
What is the Endangered Species Act?
Protects fish birds and mammals listed as threatened or endangered in the US.
How can we measure stress in Animals?
Measure Cortisol levels in blood, urine, feces and saliva
