Ethical- 5 Flashcards
As outlined by the Tri-council policy statement, what are the 3 core principles around ethical concerns?
- Respect for persons (voluntary, participation, informed consent)
- Concern for welfare (minimize risks, ensure confidentiality & anonymity)
- Justice (equal access to participation)
What are the 5 major ethical challenges posed by QI?
- Seeking permission: gaining access
- Informed consent/ autonomy
- Anonymity & confidentiality
- Researcher/ participant relationships
- Dissemination of research results
Why is seeking permission/gaining access an ethical concern?
Because such permission is asked in a position of power which may have an impact on the extent to which participation is voluntary
Why is obtaining consent an ethical concern?
Because written form is not always appropriate and possible; method used must always be documented
Research design is flexible and dynamic, so consent seeking is ongoing and should be renegotiated throughout the process
Observations can be…? (2)
Naturalistic —> researcher observes but does not intervene
Participatory—> researcher participates in the activity in some way and also observes
Why is confidentiality & anonymity an ethical concern?
Because thick quotes could sometimes identify your participants.
Why is researcher-participant relationships an ethical concern?
1.Because there may be a sort of impact or coercion in terms of voluntary participation if researchers know the subjects. Especially is the researcher is in a position of power by the invitee.
- “Pseudo-intimacy” when subjects end up revealing more than intended to.
- Dual function , therapist and researcher—> at risk of becoming a therapeutic interview (which is not what the participant consented to)
Why is dissemination of results an ethical concern?
Because it raises issues with confidentiality and potential harm:
- misrepresentation : findings are construction
- identification: shame, repercussion
- betrayal: findings contribute to worsened perceptions about this group
Online qualitative research- what is extant data?
Includes documents, visuals, records, big data, and other materials the researcher examine to find evidence
Online qualitative research- what is elicited data?
Is collected from consenting participants in response to researchers’ questions or other prompts
Online qualitative research- what is enacted data?
Generated through some kind of online activity that engages researchers and participant in the generation of data
