Ethanol Produxtion Flashcards
What is ethanol used for?
-Solvent in cosmetics and perfumes
-The alcohol found it alcoholic drinks
What are the 2 different methods of producing ethanol?
-Producing ethanol from crude oil
-Producing ethanol by fermentation
How is ethanol produced from crude oil?
Ethene is made when crude oil fractions are cracked to form an alkane and an alkene.
Ethene is then hydrated by adding water in the presence of a concentrated phosphoric catalyst
What conditions are needed to get ethanol from crude oil?
Reaction name: Hydration
Conditions:
-Concentrated phosphoric catalyst
-Steam -300 degree temp.
-70 atm pressure
How is ethanol produced by fermentation?
-Carbohydrates in plants are converted into sugars.
-They are fermented into ethanol using enzymes found in yeast. The carbohydrates can come from crops like sugar cane or sugar beet.
What are the conditions needed to produce ethanol from fermentation?
-Reaction name: Fermentation/ anaerobic respiration
Conditions:
-Yeast enzymes
-Temp of -35. too high and enzymes will denature. too cold and rate of reaction
too low
NO OXYGEN
What are the advantages of hydrating ethene? (Ethanol produced by crude oil)
-Large scale method
-High purity product
-Continuous production method
What are the disadvantages of hydrating ethene? (Ethanol from crude oil)
-High temp and pressure so ⬆️ cost
-Crude oil is non-renewable (will run out)
What are the advantages of producing ethanol by fermentation?
-Low cost
-Suitable for developing countries because not much equipment needed
-Uses renewable resources (wont run out) 😛
What are the disadvantages of producing ethanol by fermentation?
-Batch production not continuous so less efficient
-Impure ethanol still needs distilling
