Esters Flashcards
What is the general formula for the esters?
RCOOR
What is the functional group of the esters?
-COO- group
What are esters considered to be derived from?
Derived from carboxylic acids by replacing the H of the -OH group by an alkyl group
What reaction results in an ester?
The reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid
What is formed when methanol is reacted with ethanoic acid?
Methyl ethanoate
Esterification is an example of what type of reaction?
A condensation reaction
Define a condensation reaction.
A condensation reaction is a chemical reaction in which two molecules combine to form a larger molecule with the loss of a smaller molecules such as water
How do you name an ester when given only its formula?
(What are the steps involved?)
(7)
- Draw the full structural formula
- Divide structure into carboxylic acid derived part and the alcohol derived part
- Write down the name of the alkyl group attached to the bridging oxygen atom
- Identify the carboxylic acid
- Change the ‘oic’ ending to -oate
- Form the word e.g. methanoate
- Put the alkyl group before the name e,g, ethyl methanoate
What is the formula for methyl ethanoate?
C3H6O2
What is the formula for methyl ethanoate?
C3H6O2
What is the formula for ethyl methanoate?
C3H6O2
What is the formula for ethyl ethanoate?
C4H8O2
What is the formula for propyl methanoate?
C4H8O2
What is the formula for methyl propanoate?
C4H8O2
