Esters Flashcards
What is the Carboxyl group?
-C=O
| Or - COOH
OH
What is the product of a reaction between alcohols and carboxylic acids?
Esters
What type of reaction is making an ester known as?
Condensation reaction
When naming an ester, which carbon compound is used in the first part and what does it end in?
The first part is from the alcohol, and ends in -yl
Which carbon compound does -oate come from in when naming an ester?
The carboxylic acid
Why are esters often used in nail varnish?
They are solvents which have non polar bonds. This means it has a low boiling point and evaporates easily. Therefore the liquid used to apply the varnish quickly evaporates and leaves the dry varnish.
Uses of esters
Perfume,deodorant, artificial flavourings, aspirin
Is the reaction of an ester irreversible or not?
It is reversible
What is hydrolysis?
When an ester is split back into an alcohol and carboxylic acid, by a reaction with water.
What experiment can be used to hydrolyse a ester and why is this method used?
Reflux. It allows the reaction to take place at higher temperatures without losing the reactants or products through evaporation.
What is an alcohol?
A carbon compound that contains the hydroxyl functional group- OH
