Q

Why are esters often used in nail varnish?

A

They are solvents which have non polar bonds. This means it has a low boiling point and evaporates easily. Therefore the liquid used to apply the varnish quickly evaporates and leaves the dry varnish.

Q

What experiment can be used to hydrolyse a ester and why is this method used?

A

Reflux. It allows the reaction to take place at higher temperatures without losing the reactants or products through evaporation.
