What was Henry’s position like?
Extremely insecure
What had much Yorkists thought of him?
Still regarded him as a usurper and were not satisfied by the marriage to Elizabeth.
Who was a threat to Henry?
1) Several potential Yorkist claimants to the throne such as the earls of Warwick and Lincoln, Edwards IV’s nephews.
2) Margret of Burgundy, the sister of Edward IV and Richard III. She had access to funds which enabled her to encourage the ambitions of Yorkist Claimants.
Describe the Viscount Lovell and the Staffords rising in 1486? (5)
1) The first rising led by Francis, Viscount Lovell who had protested as a key supporter of Richard III- and Humphrey Stafford.
2) Lovell tried to raise a rebellion in Richard III’s heartland of support in the North Rising of Yorkshire. Simultaneously Stafford tried to raise forces against Henry, drawing upon another area of Yorkist support in the Midlands.
3) Lovell managed to escape the king’s forces but Humphery Stafford was captured and executed.
4) It is significant how there was little enthusiasm there was at this stage for a Yorkist rising in their traditional heartlands.
5) It was easily suppressed.
In the Lambert Simnel and the rebellion of the Earl of Lincoln, what did the Yorkists need?
They needed a figurehead who could claim to be a Yorkist prince and secondly, they needed financial support to generate a significant military threat to Henry.
Who was their figurehead in the Lambert Simnel and the rebellion of the Earl of Lincoln?
Lambert Simnel who was being passed off as the Earl of Warwick and had been imprisoned by Henry, and was even crowned King Edward in Ireland in May 1487.

John de la Pole, the Earl of Lincoln, himself a potential Yorkist claimant.

Henry had the real Earl of Warwick exhibited in London for all to see.
Where did the Earl of Lincoln go when he fled from Henry VII’s court?
Had gone to join the failed plotter Lord Lovell at the court of Margret of Burgundy in the Netherlands.
What did Lovell and the Earl of Lincoln persuade Margret to do?
Persuaded Margret to support Simnel’s bogus claim and to pay for a force of mercenaries to invade England.
What did Henry have to gamble when he heard about the rebellious conspiracy in the Lambert Simnel and rebellion of the Earl of Lincoln?
He reinstated the untrustworthy Earl of Northumberland, who led a major portion of Richard III’s army at the Battle of Bosworth, to power the North.
What did Henry do with coastal defences during the Lambert Simnel and rebellion of the Earl of Lincoln?
He reinforced them in East Anglia.

On the northwest coast of England in Cumberland, and crossed the Pennines in order to gather support in Richard III’s old heartland in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
What was the Yorkist gentry reluctant to do?
Commit themselves wholeheartedly.
What did Henry gather for the Battle of Stoke Field 1487?
A group of advisers, which included the close relatives of former Yorkists who had been victims of Richard III, in the South Midlands.
