How did Thatcherism differ from traditional Conservative ideology?

  • Thatcherism was the ideology adopted by Thatcher, who led the Torys from 1975 until 1990.
  • It is associated with the New Right, which combined Orthodox state (law and order) with New Liberal ideas such as the free market with less regulation.
  • Individual over society was emphasised, with small state and self-reliance.
  • One nation focused on the needs of society which Thatcherism denied. One nation prefers a more mixed economy.
