Suffragettes KU
1903- emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters christabel and Sylvia as frustrated with slow suffragist progress
Aggressive violent tactics — attacking MPs- winston Churchill with a dog whip, destroying government property and chained themselves to railings.
Suffragettes KU 2.
Caused them to get arrested a lot
Hunger strikes in prison
Photos released allowing public to feel sympathy towards them
Embarrassed government
Suffragettes Counter-
Did more harm than good as the violent tactics proved they were irrational and irresponsible so shouldn’t be trusted with the vote Churchill said ‘their cause has marched backwards’
Suffragettes evaluation
Most important as violent tactics such as attempting to blow up David Lloyd George’s summerhouse brought media attention to the cause and caused them to be thought about.
More important than ‘factor’ as secured a martyr with Emily Davidson jumping infront of kings horse - public sympathy overall making it the most important reason
Suffragists ku1
First suffrage societies in 1860s - Edinburgh Birmingham Manchester Bristol
1897 joined together under leadership of Millicent Fawcett
Peaceful tactics unlike suffragettes - petitions protests and rallies
Showed responsibility and acting maturely
Suffragist ku2
Befriended Labour Mps- keir hardy- needed support of MPs to have laws change and put pressure on liberal government
1912 conciliation bill only out by 14 Votes
Suffragists counter
Lacked ambition too cautious = no public attention gov did not see as threat or problem therefore not speeding up enfranchisement if women
Suffragists evaluation
Very important - showed women were educational, responsible and educated working their way up with the use of MPs and petitions
Not as important as Suffragettes however as their peaceful tactics brought hardly any attention towards the cause and M.Willis said their progress was slow and unspectacular’ confirming that though they tried, not having a lot of media attention slowed things down
War Ku 1
Munition factory 237 killed over 4 years shows determination etc etc
